Research Interests:
Observational extragalactic astronomy and cosmology including:
- Origin and Evolution of Galaxies
- Blue Compact Galaxies and Starburst dwarf galaxies
- Lyman alpha emission from starbursts
- Escape of ionising radiation (Lyman continuum)from starbursts
- Kinematics of the ISM and stars in starburst galaxies
- Formation of massive stars clusters
- Instrumentation for large telescopes
A true colour image of the blue compact galaxy ESO338-IG04
(Tololo 1924-416)
obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. This galaxy has vigorous star
formation
activity and
several very bright star clusters are visible in the image. The green
filaments originate in nebular emission lines from interstellar gas that
has been
ionized by the young stars.
